The Danakil is also famous for its extraordinary active volcano, Erta Ale, one of the most active volcanoes in the world.Erta Ale means “the mountain that smokes” in the Afar Language. Visiting Erta Ale in the middle of the desert is a most breathtaking event. The best time to visit the Erta Ale is at dawn to avoid excessive heat. Walking from the nearby village to the volcano takes about 3 hours but is not particularly challenging as the terrain and elevation gained are gradual. Arriving at the edge of the crater provides an exciting spectacle; explore the formations of lava and multicolored ash, emitting fumes, a sign of massive volcanic activity. The views are especially impressive in the evening when the caldera of Erta Ale shows the red lava, which can be seen only at night, with a continuous unique and fascinating display of bursting lava bubbles in the caldera. This is one of the three constantly active volcanoes in the world.
