Konso

Koonso

When you see Women wearing colorful double- layered skirts and men in blue and white stripped shorts, you are in Konso territory. The rougly quarter million Konso people are spread across 42 villages, most on hilltops and surrounded high stone walls- built centuries ago as a defenses against outsiders and even marauders from other Konso villages.

Elaborate stone terracing systems help the steep hilsides. On these terraces the the Konso raise sourgum, millet, coal, peans, and sun flowers.

The Konso are also well regarded arsitians. Weveres made the traditional skirts and shorts, smiths crafts bronze earing and braclets, and wood carvers create the famous Wakka funerary statues. The Konso language is in the Cushitic family, and while little documentation exists it is thought that the Konso have inhabited these area for at least four centuries.

Karrat Konso is located along the main road that extends from the town of Arba Minch to the south Omo valley.
